Mutilations Suggests the Old Horrors of Jack the Ripper
Woman's Companion Escapes but Leaves a Clue Behind
New York, Dec. 20.
The Whitechapel atrocities of Jack the Ripper and the murder of Old Shakespeare but the Arab, Ben Ali, in this city, were recalled by the discovery of a woman in a sailor's resort of the lowest type in James Slip, near the East river.
The woman, who was identified as Sarah Martick, a notorious character of the Cherry Hill section, went to the place, last night, accompanied by a man, who appeared to be a Swede, and who registered as Carl Nelson and wife.
The man left the hotel this afternoon and an hour later the body of his companion was found. The woman's throat had been cut and the body was otherwise frightfully mangled. She had evidently been killed while asleep, as the condition of the room gave no indication that a struggle had taken place. The man carried two bundles which were found in the room and which may afford a possible clue to the murderer. One of the bundles contained two striped shirts, both covered with blood, as if the murderer had wiped his hands on them. On the wrapper of a box which contained a pair of men's shoes, was written in pencil "Belino."
On the floor were found two purchase checks, showing the purchase, Saturday, from "Meigs & Co, Incorporated. Bridgeport, Conn.," of a pair of shoes and a sweater. It was noticed that the man wore a sweater when he left the hotel.
The Bridgeport police authorities were notified by telephone and Central office detectives went to Bridgeport tonight to assist in running down the clues.
