George Clapp

Witness at Catherine Eddowes' inquest.

Caretaker of 5 Mitre Street which backed onto Mitre Square.

On the night of 29th September 1888, Clapp and his wife had gone to bed at 11.00pm, sleeping in the back room on the second floor, which overlooked the square. They heard no noise or disturbance of any kind and the first they heard of the murder was between 5.00 and 6.00am the following morning. A Mrs. Tew, a nurse in attendance to Mrs. Clapp, also slept in the house, occupying a room on the third floor.[1]
