WORSHIP STREET
CHARGE OF STABBING IN A SPITALFIELDS LODGING HOUSE

Henry Bulkley, 37, labourer, was charged with feloniously cutting and wounding Patrick Manning with intent to do him grievous bodily harm. Police Constable 7 HR said that the prosecutor was too ill to attend, and a house surgeon at the London Hospital proved that the man was admitted to that institution at 10 o'clock that (Wednesday) morning suffering from a stab in the left thigh, the injury being serious. The police constable said that he apprehended the prisoner in the lodging house, 39 Dorset street, where he was in bed, the stabbing having taken place at the adjoining lodging house, 37 Dorset street. The prisoner, when told the charge, said, "I don't know what you mean; I don't know anything about it." No evidence was given that the prisoner had anything to do with the matter; but Mr. Bushby ordered him to be remanded for a week. The prisoner as he left the court said, "I ain't allowed to open my mouth."

THE SALVATION ARMY AND OUTCAST LONDON

Sir,
I am glad you have given special prominence to Mr. Booth's letter of appeal to the Christian community at large, in reference to rescue work, combined with that equally large and important work, which some ministers have been attempting to carry out for many years. I trust his sympathetic appeal will meet with generous response; but others are trying to carry out in equally destitute centres a not less important and vigorous work, in placing on a firmer footing many of their neighbours whose circumstances are those of considerable embarrassment arising from no fault of their own, and to whom timely and liberal assistance just now will give fresh impetus and new heart, and thus save from chronic pauperism. I could name many such in this district, who if encouraged and relieved from pressure now would in all human probability recover their former positions of independence, and by dint of continued energy and persevering industry, which have not yet departed, put "a new song in their mouths and establish their goings." The best years of my life have been voluntarily given to such work in this neighbourhood, and will continue to be given, as long as life and energy permit.

I am, dear sir, your truly,
E. Schnadhorst.
St. Stephen's road, North Bow, E.
Dec. 26.
