Henry Smith

SMITH, Henry

Born : 1835

Educated : Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University.

1869 : Commissioned in Suffolk Artillery Militia.

1885 : Appointed Chief Superintendent, City of London Police.

1890-1901 : Commissioner, City of London Police.

1910 : Knighted. Published his memoirs "From Constable to Commisioner".

1920 : Died.

In his memoirs Smith wrote that the Ripper "...completely beat me and every Police officer in London." and that "...I have no more idea now where he lived than I had twenty years ago." (From Constable to Commissioner, 1910)
