Sorry, post cancelled. Didn't use my brain before typing. (Shaddap Tom Jones - I know it's not unusual.)

Hi Belinda,

Yes, there are a few Janes in my phone book, so it may be worth checking out.

Love,

Caz

Belinda, Caz,

The only Mary Jane of a similar age I can find at present is a Mary Anne Jane who's marriage is registered in March 1881 to either Francis Hughes or John James Oskins in Pontypridd, Wales.

Will keep looking though.

Sarah

Hi all

Similarly, I suppose it's possible that the graffito (whenever it was written) could have been about a family called Jew, as this was a surname of that time.

Or a family called Juwes even.

Hi Sarah

I looked for "Juwe" and "Juw" in the '81 census but couldn't find any.

I think I once saw a family called Apron or Aprons, which made me wonder if there was a Levi Apron in the area!

But there must have been a family called Jewson, they are a fairly large builders' merchants. Also there was a company in Arnold, Notts who went under the name of Henry Jew.

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

Maybe they had done some shoddy building work for Jack and this was his way of complaining.
