Some sad news, just received from Paul Begg. It appears Paul Feldman passed away a few weeks ago. He suffered a heart attack at his home and never recovered. Despite all the ill-feeling surrounding the diary and the various personalities involved, it was always clear that Paul fervently believed in what he did and honestly felt he was on the right path toward solving the mystery. Although illness over the past several years has kept him from the usual Ripperological circles, he had many friends in the study and he will surely be missed. More information will surely be available in the next Ripperologist, and of course anyone who wishes to share their memories or thoughts of Paul is welcome to do so here. Stephen P. Ryder, Exec. Editor Casebook: Jack the Ripper

Hi Stephen Thanks for this news. Whatever we might think of Mr. Feldman and his research methods, this is sad news. I never met him but it appears that after a patch of bad health and economic worries he got his life back on track and remarried not too long ago. I would like to believe that his later years were spent more happily. Spry, I will look forward to the obituary, which as you correctly point out, we will be preparing for the next issue of Ripperologist. All the best Chris Christopher T. Sad news regarding Paul (Feldy). We did talk sometimes but only on one subject. We did have something in common. He was a great Arsenal fan, a true 'Gooner'. There wont be any peace up above now when he comes across a 'Spurs' fan. He won't mind me saying that. Andy & Sue. |

While I never saw eye to eye with Paul, or approved of his methods of promoting his theories, this still comes as very sad news. Professional differences pale into insignificance in the light of such personal tragedy; and I would certainly like to add my sincere condolences to those already offered to Paul’s family. alex

I met Paul Feldman only once, when he came to the old Cloak & Dagger Club to give us a chat on James Maybrick and the Diary. I liked his presentation - as I liked his book - but I have never believed in his theories. Yet I believe that he believed in them and was sincere in advancing them forcefully. Let him find peace. Very sad news. I only met Feldy once, when my co-authors and I interviewed him for Ripper Diary. His continued enthusiasm for his theories, while not infectious enough for his liking, was clear to see and totally sincere. Maybe Feldy and Melvin are continuing the debate as we speak, unless they now know all the answers. Love, Caz X (Message edited by caz on June 04, 2005) |

My condolences go out to Paul Feldman's friends and family. Feldy's book was the second I ever read on the Whitechapel Murders, and it rekindled my interest in the subject. For that I owe him thanks. After reading his book, one couldn't help but feel they sort of knew the chap; he asserted his energy & personality into his theory in a way few authors do. It seemed to me that some of his theories nearly bordered on madness, but I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at someone willing to risk both their health and fortune probing a 100+ year old mystery. While I didn't accept his conclusions, I certainly found the retelling of his eccentic investigation utterly engrossing. It's a pity. 'He, too, rode our winged-horse." I wonder if Dr. Rubenstein ever finished that book on renegade historians? Will Paul Feldman be featured? RP (Message edited by rjpalmer on June 04, 2005) |

That is indeed sad news. Between other things, I'm still reading Paul Feldman's "Jack the Ripper: The Final Chapter" , and you can definitely see he was passionate about what he did and would do whatever it took. I don't believe Maybrick was the Ripper, but the effort and time he put into his research and the book is outstanding, and I'm sure he'll be missed. R.I.P., Paul. Regards, Adam. This is absolutely horrible, particularly given that Paul is practically a newlywed who had taken a new start on life. Years ago, he and I exchanged many e-mails, and he was always very pleasant and giving with me. My thoughts are with his widow. R.I.P. Yours truly, Tom Wescott |

Does anyone know how old Paul would have been? I don't really have any idea, but I don't think he was all that old, right? Regards, Adam. "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once." - Kirsten Cooke,"Allo' Allo'"

That is indeed very young. Although he was a well-known name in the field, I haven't read anything in depth by Mr Feldman so I can't comment on his work, but it is a shame to hear nevertheless. My condolences. All the best G. Andersson, author/crime historian Sweden The Swedes are the men That Will not be Blamed for Nothing

Thanks for that, Caz. Yes, I didn't think Paul would be too old, but early fifties is even worse. Too young to die. Perhaps he had some kind of heart condition? Either way, it's very unfortunate that he died so young. Regards, Adam. "Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once." - Kirsten Cooke,"Allo' Allo'"

I exchanged emails with Paul a while ago, and he was always kind and thoughtful in his replies to me. The Final Chapter did actually kick start me again into taking the subject more seriously, and again although I didn't agree with his choice of suspect, he was a cracking good writer and did a grand job on the book. I am really sad to hear that he is gone, and at such a young age. My sympathies go to his family. I will miss him. Jane |

G'day everyone, I know I'm late with this but.... May all who knew Paul, especially family and friends, be assured that he was admired by many and his writings will give testimony to his enthusiasm and beliefs. Whether right or wrong he believed in what he said. Even though I never met you Paul, God bless and rest in peace mate. Nicholas |

I just found out. This is such a tragedy.Although I did not know Paul personally, I enjoyed his work. Through his book The Final Chapter, he has conclusively proven that James Maybrick was Jack the Ripper. It defies belief how many people still continue to doubt this fact, even in these posts about his death. Paul has proven the diary is genuine through solid incontrovertable facts. If any of you cannot put forward any facts or research as to why it is a forgery then none of your opinions hold any water. The fact that it has been so savagely attacked without being proven false means that the mystery is solved and these other authors don't want to lose their meal ticket and cash cow. Good job Paul may you rest in peace. }} Themis |

Sad to hear Paul has passed away. When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.(Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). I think Paul proved beyond all reasonable doubt that James Maybrick was Jack the Ripper. |

Wayne, Whilst not wishing to belittle Pauls efforts, questionable as they were, I beg to differ regards to your final sentence. Reasonable doubt still exists. Cheers, Monty
