Hi Chris, According to a report by Chief Inspector Swanson Dr Phillips was also involved in Eddowes' case. He apparently didn't appear at the inquest, but together with Dr Brown, he was responsible for the post-mortem examination. All the best, Frank "Every disadvantage has it's advantage." Johan Cruijff

Hi Chris Bond took a look at McKenzie. Phillips also mentions the Chief Surgeon and his friend (whoever they were) plus Drs Brown, Clark, and a "Mr Boswick"(?) (from Sourcebook). What about Mylett? Robert |

Hi Chris, There was a Doctor Wheeler of Mile End Road called to the Ada Wilson case 28/3/88 .He bandaged her wounds and ordered her to be taken to the London Hospital. Interestingly he was the doctor who was called on 31/3/88 when Annie Millwood collapsed one month after she had been stabbed in Whites Row[25/2/88].Dr Wheeler of Mile End Road pronounced life extinct and the body was removed to the mortuary. I am currently very intersted in the names of all the doctors, especially the police doctors called in on the case, some whose presence may not always have been recorded. So its great you are involved in researching them. Thanks again to all for the help. here is an example of the type of information I am compiling: Dr Rees Ralph Llewellyn (born 1850/51) Rees Ralph Llewellyn was listed at the time of the Whitechapel murders as living at 152 Whitechapel Road and indeed he lived at this address for a considerable period. He was the son of Llewellyn Llewellyn, who was also a doctor, and Emily Llewellyn, whose maiden name was Emily Culshaw. His father came from Brecknock in South Wales but had already moved to Whitechapel by the time he married his mother. This marriage was registered in the first quarter of 1850. Rees' mother died when he was still young - her death, at the age of 42, was registered in Whitechapel in the last quarter of 1870. By the time of the 1871 census, the family, headed by Rees' widowed father, is already noted as living at the address which he still occupied in 1888. 1871: 152 Whitechapel Road Head: Llewellyn Llewellyn aged 51 born Brecknock, South Wales - Medical practitioner M.D., L.S.A. - Widowed Children: Rees R aged 20 Walter aged 15 Arthur aged 13 Ernest aged 9 Eugene E aged 8 Reginald L aged 4 All children born in Whitechapel Niece: Margaret Davies aged 30 born Brecknock, South Wales Assistant: James W Hope aged 20 born Brecon - Medical assistant Servants: Ellen Wright aged 24 born Middlesex - Cook Emma Burton aged 18 born Middlesex - Housemaid Eugenie Mensburger aged 20 born France - Nurse Rees' father, Llewellyn, died in Whitchapel in the second quarter of 1880, his age at the time of death being noted as 60. As far as can be traced, Rees Llewellyn never married, but lived with various of his siblings. By the 1881 census he was still at the same address, and the household was comprised as follows: 1881: 152 Whitechapel Road. Head: Rees R Llewellyn aged 30 born Middlesex - Surgeon - Unmarried Brother: Ernest E Llewellyn aged 19 born Middlesex - Medical Student Sister: Eugene E Llewellyn aged 18 born Middlesex - Independent Assistant: Charles J Fooks aged 23 born Cerne, Dorset - Medical Student Servants: Amy Sedgwick aged 17 (?) born Dee Church, Derby - Cook Maria Louisa Smith aged 17 born Hertford - Housemaid By 1891, three years after the Whitechapel murders, Llewlellyn was still at the same address and still living with his sister: 1891 152 Whitechapel Road Head: Rees R llewellyn aged 40 born London - Physician and surgeon Sister: Eugene E Llewellyn aged 28 born London - Living on her own means Visitor: Marion Jaques aged 30 born London - Ladies companion Assistant: Benjamin Badcock aged 33 born Chilham, Oxford - Physician and surgeon Servants: Annie Bayee aged 19 born Spalding, Lincs - Cook Annie Dawson aged 20 born London - Housemaid Finally, by 1901, the family had moved to Hackney. The exact date and circumstances of leaving Whitechapel are not known. By this time Rees was living with the same sister and two brothers, one of whom had followed him into the medical profession: 1901: 108 Stamford Hill, Hackney Head: Rees R Llewellyn aged 50 born Whitechapel - Physician and Surgeon Brother: Walter Llewellyn aged 45 born Whitechapel - Physician and Surgeon Brother: Reginald L Llewellyn aged 34 born Whitechapel - Architect Sister: Eugene E Llewellyn aged 38 born Whitechapel Servants: Edith G Jones aged 24 born Holborn - Cook Eleanor M Jones aged 22 born Holborn - Housemaid

George Bagster Phillips (1835/36 - 1897) Phillips was born in Camberwell, Surrey. The exact year is unknown as it predates the establishment of national registers for Birth, Marriage and Death records in 1837. By the time of the 1871 census he was already established at the address in Spital Square which he was to occupy until the time of the Whitechapel murders and after. In 1871 he is listed as still unmarried, sharing his residence with one assistant and one servant: 1871: 2 Spital Square, Norton Folgate Head: George B Phillips aged 36 born Camberwell, Surrey - Surgeon M.R.C.S. - Unmarried Boarder: William Neale aged 55 born Yarmouth, Norfolk - Assistant Servant: Mary Ann Frost aged 29 born Fusing, Essex Phillips married shortly before the 1881 census. The union is registered in Kensington in the third quarter of 1880 (Volume 1a Page 146) and the maiden name of his spouse is given as Eliza Toms. The 1881 census listing shows him and his new wife still at the same address: 1881: 2 Spital Square, Norton Folgate Head: George B Phillips aged 46 born Camberwell, Surrey - General Practitioner, M.R.C.S., L.S.A. Wife: Eliza Phillips aged 42 born Chard, Somerset Assistant: Geoffrey McCarthy aged 42 born Connemara, Ireland - Assistant L.S.A. Servants: Emily Gristwood aged 30 born Brompton - Cook Sarah Long aged 18 born Stepney - Housemaid The couple, who appear to have had no children, and a growing household of assistants and servants, was still at Spital Square in 1891: 1891: 2 Spital Square, Norton Folgate Head: George B Phillips aged 56 born Camberwell, Surrey - Surgeon, registered General Practitioner Wife: Eliza Phillips aged 52 born Chard, Somerset Locum Tenens: Henry D Halliday aged 47 born Bridgwater, Somerset - Surgeon, registered General Practitioner Servants: Mary Adams aged 34 born Islington Selina J Duncan aged 20 born Darlington, Durham Caretaker: Charlotte Woodhouse aged 57 born Hibbard, Norfolk Visitor: Maria Turner aged 74 born Beccles, Suffolk We do not find Phillips listed in the 1901 census as he died in 1897. His death was registered in Whitechapel (Volume 1c Page 198) in the last quarter of 1897 and his age at the time of death was given as 63. By the time of the census, his widow, Eliza, had gone to live with her unmarried sister in Finchley: 1901: Snowdon Cottage, Holden Avenue, Finchley, Middlesex Head: Sarah Toms aged 65 born Chard, Somerset - Living on own means Sister: Eliza Phillips aged 62 born Chard, Somerset - Living on own means Servant: Ada L Pascoe aged 22 born Lambeth - General servant Chris |

Frederick William Blackwell 1852 - 1900 Blackwell came from a Northampton family which appears to have no immediate medical background. His own place of birth is given variously as Edgbaston or Birmingham in Warwickshire. He was the son of James Blackwell, a tailor, and Harriet Blackwell, who may have been some kind of teacher, her profession being given only as "Private School." He had one sibling, a sister named Elizabeth, six years younger than him. He was still living with the family at the time of the 1871 census, and it would appear that he had initially set out on a pharmacological career rather than a general medical one: 1871: 359 Bristol Road, Edgbaston, Warwickshire Head: James Blackwell aged 57 born Harpole, Northants - Tailor and draper Wife: Harriet Blackwell aged 48 born Kettering, Northants - Private school Children: Frederick W aged 19 born Birmingham - Dispenser to Surgeon, Registered Student of the Pharmacological Society Elizabeth aged 13 born Edgbaston Servant: Mary Jane Ryder aged 16 born Stourbridge, Worcestershire. By 1881 Blackwell had moved to London and was already established at the address in Commercial Road which he was to occupy until the time of the Whitechapel murders. At this stage he was still unmarriied and his status is given as that of a Medical Assistant: 1881: 100 Commercial Road Head: Frederick W Blackwell aged 29 born Birmingham - Medical Assistant, L.S.A. London, A. Phar. Soc. London Boarder: Charles W Maddison aged 26 born Boston, Lincs - Medical Student Servants: Davis Rees aged 24 born Glamorgan - Chemist's assistant Esther Lee aged 52 born Norton, Herts - Housekeeper In 1891, three years after the murders, Blackwell was still at the same address and by this time had married. His wife's name is given as Anne Blackwell and the couple had a son, James Ernest Blackwell, whose birth was registered in St George in the East in the first quarter of 1889 (Volume 1c Page 398) 1891: 100 Commercial Road Head: Frederick W Blackwell aged 39 born Edgbaston, Warwickshire - General practitioner, L.R.C.R. Ed. registered Wife: Anne D Blackwell aged 39 born Brackley, Oxford Son: James E Blackwell aged 3 (?) born Commercial Road Boarders: William M Bartlett aged 29 born Stonehouse, Devon - Chemist's assistant Patrick J Casey aged 38 born Bruff, Ireland - Medical Servants: Maria F Hayhorn aged 24 born Camberwell - Nurse Alice Donnitburn aged 26 born Bromley by Bow - Domestic Servant Blackwell himself is not listed in the 1901 census as he died in 1900. His death was registered in Rochford, Essex and his age at death given as 49 (Volume 4a Page 334.) In 1901, Blackwell's son, James Ernest, is listed as a boarder in a school in Leigh Essex. The address is Cliff Lodge School, Cliff Road, Leigh, Essex and the master of the school was John henry Howell aged 45. The boy's details are given as: Boarder: James Ernest Blackwell aged 12 born St George's, London. By 1901 Blackwell's widow was also located in Essex and details are given of two further children which the couple had had: Address: Inverary, Leigh Road, Prittlewell, Essex Head: Ann S Blackwell aged 49 born Brackley, Oxford - Living on own means - Widowed Children: Frank aged 8 born Forest Gate, Essex Dorothy M aged 4 born London Servant: Elizabeth King aged 21 born Foulness Island, Essex

Many Thanks Chris for these fascinating insights into the Doctors and their families and their families occupations! Practically the whole of Whitechapel circa 1888 becomes "knowable" through such splendid research! Its amazing how many characters you alone have introduced us to-who married who and when, what they did for a living, what streets they resided in-even who might have known whom looking back at Kosminski when he lived in Sion Square for example. Sometimes I think its the people we dont read about in the books that might hold the key to the mystery----those that didnt come forward who may have known. I always think too that someone who the women didnt fear, who had a right to be walking the streets at night such as an on duty doctor or doctors assistant or even one of the police who walked those streets as part of their beat, that it may be worth investigating their background ----not especially the Phillips type that was in attendance at so many inquests but people like Blackwell for example, Anyway thanks for giving Whitechapel such life! |

George William Sequeira born 1859 Sequeira came firmly from a medical background and also from the Whitechapel area. He was the son of Henry and Amelia Sequeira. His father was a surgeon, and there is another medic named Sequeira, James, who was firmly attached to the Whitechapel district. From his age, I think it most likely that this James Sequeira was Henry's brother, and thus George's uncle, but that is not yet proven. The address we are given for Sequeira at the time of the murders, 34 Jewry Street, has previously been occupied by his parents, but the first address at which we find the family is at a different dwelling in the same street: 1871: 1 Jewry Street, Aldgate, London Head: Henry Little Sequeira aged 43 born 132 Whitechapel High St. - Surgeon M.R.C.S., L.A.S., F.O.S. Wife: Amelia Sequeira aged 41 born Peckham Children: Amelia Louisa aged 15 George William aged 12 James Baily aged 4 Alfred Edmund aged 1 All children born Jewry St., City Assistant: Charles Hale aged 28 born Shaftesbury - Surgeon's assistant Servant: Mary Sophia Millard aged 28 born Whitechapel It was by the time of the 1881 census that the family had relocated to the 34 Jewry Street address at which George was still living in 1888: 1881: 34 Jewry Street, St Katherine Cree, London Head: Henry L Sequeira aged 56 born Whitechapel - General Practitioner and Surgeon Wife: Amelia Sequeira aged 51 born Peckham - Surgeon's wife Children: Septimus W aged 8 born Aldgate Assistant: William E Goodwill aged 19 born Scarborough - Medical Assistant, Associate of Arts, Oxford Servant: Maria Oliver aged 27 born Romford George William by this time would have been 22 or 23 years of age, but I have been unable to locate him under that name at all in 1881. We next hear of him in the last quarter of 1886, when he married Georgiana Peachey, the marriage being registered in Lambeth (Volume 1d Page 854.) However, there is an 1881 listing for the James Sequeira mentioned above, possibly George's uncle. 23 Cassland Road, London Head: James Scott Sequeira aged 52 born Whitechapel - General Practitioner M.R.C.S., L.S.A. Wife: Maria R Sequeira aged 46 born Lambeth Children: James H aged 15 Ernest R aged 13 Walter S H aged 11 Clara R L aged 9 All children born in Whitechapel Sister: Louisa Sequeira aged 56 born Whitechapel - Independent Visitor: Isabel Wylie aged 10 born Liverpool Servant: Marian H Stone aged 30 born Southwark As Henry is listed in 1881 as aged 56 and born in Whitechapel, and James is aged 52 and born in Whitechapel, this, coupled with the very unusual surname, makes their being brothers a strong possibility. There is yet another Sequeira houshold with medical connections listed in 1881, with connections to Aldgate. 156 Tulse Hill, Lambeth, Surrey. Head (Daughter): Amelia L Sequeira aged 25 born Aldgate Sons: John B Sequeira aged 14 born Aldgate Henry J Sequeira aged 23 born Aldgate - Medical Practitioner L.S.A. 1880 University of London Matriculated 1874 Visitors: Sarah M Brook aged 75 born Camberwell Henry J Halford aged 26 born Clerkenwell - Artificial Eye maker Servants: Augusta Carter aged 17 born Iver - Cook Harriet Bosley aged 16 born Old Cleeve, Somerset - Housemaid. This household is extremely odd. The head of household is also listed as "daughter". The two male residents listed as "sons" cannot possibly be her sons because of the ages. This Amelia L Sequeira is the same Amelia Louisa listed in 1871 as George William's older sister. The only child still living with the parents in Jewry Street was Septimus. Although the names are different, the other details for the two "sons" fit for Amelia's two younger brothers. James Baily aged 4 in 1871 becomes John B aged 14 in 1881. George William aged 12 in 1871 becomes Henry J aged 23 in 1881. If this is the case, why the change of name would have happened is unknown. The most likely scenario is, in my opinion, that Henry and Amelia set their three oldest children up in a separate household in Tulse Hill. Therefore Henry would nominally have been the householder, and the three would correctly have been listed as his daughter and sons. The only brother Amelia had of about the age of 23 at that time was George William, and I am therefore reasonably confident that the Henry J listed is, in fact, him. But, again, the name change is a mystery. We are back on firmer ground by 1891. This was after George William's marriage and he and his wife had moved out of London to Essex and had already produced a young family: 1891: 6 Arlington Villas, Fairlop Road, Leyton, Essex Head: George W Sequeira aged 32 born London City - Registered general practitioner Wife: Georgianna aged 28 born Woodford, Essex Children: Horace aged 3 born London City Edmund aged 2 born Dulwich, Surrey Ida aged 10 months born Leytonstone Servants: Ellen Edmonds aged 21 born Mile End Minnie L Simpson aged 18 born Canning Town By 1891 the family was still in Essex, though at a different address and are listed as follows: 1901: Daleleigh, Wellington Road, Edmonton, Middlesex Head: George W Sequeira aged 42 born City of London - Surgeon Wife: Georgiana Sequeira aged 37 born Woodford: Children: Horace aged 13 born Aldgate Ida aged 10 born Leytonstone Marion aged 8 born Leytonstone Bertha aged 5 born Wandsworth Boarder: Gertrude Sequeira aged 22 born Upton Park - Companion Servant: Florence E Arnold aged 25 born Enfield Who this Gertrude Sequeira is I have been unable to trace and to whom she is a "companion" is not clear. |

Hi Chris, I am guessing that it is the doctors handling the autopsies that most interest you, but I wonder if you are including Dr. Sir William Gull Dr. Thomas Neill Cream Dr. Thomas Dutton and even George Chapman, who was supposedly a barber surgeon in Poland and Russia. Also Dr. Forbes Winslow. By the way, regarding Dr. Blackwell's younger sister Elizabeth. I recall that the first female doctor to practice in the United States was Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, and I believe she was English originally. Is it possible that this is the same woman? Jeff |

Hi Jeff Initially I am looking at the doctors who were originally involed in the Whitechapel murders i.e. were consulted in their professional capacity. The others you mention would certainly would be worth a look! I have already done some work on Thomas Dutton which is elsewhere on the message boards The comment about Elizabeth Blackwell was knew to memand certainly interesting. I'll see what I can find! Dr. Rygate This medic poses a problem in that in the report that mentions him (The Times 4 October 1888) we are only given his surname. This states that he was present at the post mortem on Elizabeth Stride. Phillips says: "At 3 p.m. on Monday at St. George's Mortuary, in the presence of Dr. Rygate and Mr. Johnston, Dr. Blackwell and I made a post-mortem examination." The Rygate family was one which produced a number of doctors, headed by John James Rygate. The family is listed in 1871 as follows: 1871: 126 Cannon Street Road, London Head: John James Rygate aged 46 born Grays, Essex - Bachelor of Medicine Wife: Emma Rygate aged 45 born Middlesex Children: B (Male) aged 18 born St George's east - Medical Student Ada H aged 15 born St George's East David John aged 13 born Mile End John Richard aged 11 born Mile End Reginald aged 10 born Mile End H Jane aged 5 born St George's East Servants: Margaret Lane aged 18 born Harwich, Essex Hannah (?) Lane aged 16 born Harwich. By the time of the 1881 census the family was still together and living in the same road but at a different number: 1881: 116 Cannon Street Road, London: Head: John James Rygate aged 56 born Essex - Surgeon Wife: Emma Rygate aged 50 born London Children: Benjamin R aged 28 - Surgeon Adela Harriet aged 24 Daniel John aged 23 - Surgeon John Richard aged 22 - Medical Student Reginald aged 20 - Medical student Phoebe (?) aged 15 All children born in London Servants: Alice Irish aged 23 born London Amelia Mazle aged 24 born Gibraltar By 1891 I can find no trace of John James or Emma Rygate, the parents, but have been unable to find a date of death for either. The family had split up and the three sons for whom I have been able to find records for 1891, all of whom were doctors, had all left London. They are listed as follows: 1891: 5 Jesus Lane, Cambridge David Rygate aged 33 born London - Surgeon Servants: Eliza Russell aged 37 born Cambridge James Payne aged 13 born Cambridge - Page The Vicarage, Wardington, Oxfordshire: Lodger: Reginald Rygate aged 30 born Mile End - General medical practitioner (Head of household - William Bonham aged 72 - Carpenter and joiner) The Village, Weston Zoyland, Somerset Head: John R Rygate aged 32 born London - Duly registered general practitioner Servant: Selina Bastable aged 22 born Burrowbridge, Somerset I would suggest that the Dr Rygate who was present at the inquest on Stride was one of these sons, but until we can definitely establish the date of death of John James Rygate we cannot absolutely rule him out. Therefore, Saunders must have had a previous marriage. In fact he was married for the first time in 1850 in Brighton but I have yet to verify the name of his first spouse. I have been unable to trace the marriage details for William and Eliza to date. |

Hi Chris, The 1901 census has a listing for a John Rygate Age: 76 Born: Essex Grays Administrative County: Essex Sussex Civil Parish: Hove Occupation: Bachelor of Medicine Retired http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ I found the following on a Dr. Rygate listing him as medical officer for St. George’s East. 1885 "Vestries and Board of Works" London 1885 St. Georges in the East, Vestry Hall, Cable St, E.,. Clerk T.G. HARRISON Medical Off. Dr. RYGATE, mb, Analyst W.C. YOUNG Surveyor George A. WILSON 1888 The annual report of the medical officer of health, Dr Rygate, showed the East End had: the lowest marriage rate (10.4 per 1,000 as against 16.2 for the metropolis - the lowest on record); the highest birth rate (always found in the poorest and most densely populated areas) of 39.5 per 1,000 and the highest death rate of 28 per 1,000. 1898 Interview with Dr Rygate, medical officer St George's East, January 1898 http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl sub=search_catalogue_pages&arg0=rygate&arg1=and I believe that you are correct in that it was one of Dr. Rygate’s sons as he was retired in 1901 and most likely would have been retired three years earlier at the age of 73. Frederick Gordon Brown born 1842 Frederick Brown was London born and bred but his wife and her family came from Essex and, as we shall see, he became closely linked with members of his wife's family. A number of them came to live with the couple and one of them ended up as Brown's professional partner. Brown married Emily Appelford in the first quarter of 1869. The marriage was registered in Witham in Essex (Volume 4a Page 360). We first see the couple in 1871 in the census returns. They were living in St Mary Axe which was very close to Mitre Square. At the time of the census the couple were being visited by Brown's wife's parents and the full liting is as follows: 1871: 29 St Mary Axe, London Head: Frederick G Brown aged 29 born London - General Practitioner in Medicine M.R.C.S. M.S.A. L.M. Undergraduate Wife: Emily Brown aged 24 born Coggeshall, Essex Visitors: William Appleford aged 69 born Coggeshall, Essex - Miller Bithiah Appleford aged 60 born Colchester Servant: Elizabeth Maskill aged 37 born London The address given for Brown at the time of the Whitechapel murders was 17 Finsbury Circus. By 1881 the couple were living in the Circus but at a different number, in fact next door to their future abode: 1881: 16 Finsbury Circus, London Head: Frederick G Brown aged 39 born St Botolph, Bishopsgate - Married - General Pracritiioner M.R.C.S. M.S.A. L.M. London Sister: Frances M Brown aged 46 born St Botolph Servants: Jane Lenton aged 21 born South Betherton, Somerset - Cook Alice Smith aged 23 born Holbrook, Suffolk - Housemaid Mary C Arnold aged 13 born Hoxton It will be noticed that Brown's wife, Emily, is not listed above. This does not mean there had been some marital rift. In fact I have traced that at the time of the census she was visiting a household in Surrey, that of another surgeon. The circumstances of this visit and the relationship between the Smee and the Brown families, of course, is not known: The Grange, Hackbridge Road, Beddington, Surrey Head: Alfred H Smee aged 39 born London - Surgeon Wife: Jane Smee aged 40 born Beakford, Middlesex Grand Aunt: Emma Smee aged 78 born Kensington Visitors: Sarah Jones aged 31 born Deal, Kent Emily Brown aged 33 born Coggeshall, Essex - Surgeon's wife Servants: Lydia Adams aged 28 born Winkfield Elizabeth Ashford aged 43 born Exeter Emily Woodbine aged 24 born Drayton Mary Field aged 18 born Camberwell The family had moved to No 17 by 1891 and by this time the household included Brown's sister Fanny (the Frances listed in 1881) and two sisters of his wife. His partner is listed as Stephen Appleford, his brother in law: 1891: 17 Finsbury Circus, London Head: Frederick G Brown aged 49 born City of London - Surgeon Wife: Emily Brown aged 44 born Coggeshall Sister: Fanny M Brown aged 56 born City of London Sisters in Law: Ellen B Appleford aged 46 born Coggeshall Fanny C Appleford aged 40 born Coggeshall Servants: Susan Weyman aged 36 born Little Downham, Cambridge Jane Swain aged 28 born Theberton, Suffolk Alice Forth aged 20 born Bucklers End, Somerset John Clayson aged 14 born Dover - page Partner: Stephen H Appleford aged 39 born Coggeshall - Surgeon By 1901 the houselhold had grown even more. His wife's two sisters werw still living with the couple but had now been joined by three cousins. Why all these relatives came to be living with Frederick and his wife is not known, but it would be fascinating to know. William Appleford, his wife's father, died in Witham in 1874 at the age of 72. It may well have been this that prompted the move of the two sisters. 1901: 17 Finsbury Circus, London Head: Frederick Gordon Brown aged 59 born London City - Surgeon Wife: Emily Brown aged 54 born Coggeshall Sisters (sic): Ellen B Appleford aged 56 born Coggeshall Fanny Caroline Appleford aged 50 born Coggeshall Cousins: Agnes Louisa Greenall aged 47 born Walthamstow Annie Ethel Gibbons aged 27 born Wantage, Berks Florence Minnie Gibbons aged 23 born Wantage, Berks Servants: Clara Amelia Rider aged 39 born Rotherhiths Flora Rose Hills aged 19 born Merton Annie Louisa Clark aged 19 born Hornsey Bernard Harley aged 14 born Albrighton, Shropshire - Page |

Charles Alfred Hibbert, assistant to Dr. Bond I have only been able to trace one Charles Hibbert who was engaged in a medical career. His middle initial is consistenly given as H and not A for Alfred. Also he was from Cheshire, and all three census listings below give him as living in the town in that county in which he was born. If this is the Charles Hibbert who assisted Bond, he must have come to London at some time in the 1880s to further his medical training. At the time of the murders, this Hibbert would have been 17 or 18 years of age. I cannot prove this is the Hibbert involved, but is the only person of that name engaged in medicine during this period that I have been able to find. 1881: Low Marple, Cheshire Head: James Thomas Hibbert aged 50 born Marple - Surgeon Wife: Mary Hibbert aged 50 born Compstall, Cheshire Children: Sarah W aged 18 Ellen A aged 16 Edith A aged 14 Florence M aged 11 Charles H aged 10 All children born in Marple 1891: The Surgery, Low Marple, Cheshire Head: Mary Hibbert - Widowed - aged 60 born Marple Children: Sarah W aged 28 Florence M aged 22 - Assistant teacher Charles H aged 20 - Medical student All children born Marple Other: Henry C Bradley aged 59 born Preston, Lancs - Medical duly registered 1901: Brabyns Brow, Marple, Derbyshire Head: Mary Hibbert aged 70 born Compstall, Cheshire Children: Sarah W aged 38 Florence M aged 32 - Assistant elementary teacher Charles H aged 30 - Medical Practitioner Surgeon All children born in Marple

Thomas Bond 1842 - 1901 Bond originated from Somerset and the date of his moving to London is not known. Bond was twice married for in the census returns for 1871 to 1891 his wife is listed as Rosa Sophia Bond, born in Esher Surrey. This marriage was registered in Kensington in the second quarter of 1870 (Volume 1a 213) wherein his wife's maiden name is given as Rosa Sophia Hayes. However, in the 1901 census the name of his wife is given as Louisa Bond, born in Norwich. Rosa Sophia Bond's death at the age of 55 was registered at St. George's Hanover Square in the third quarter of 1899 (Volume 1a Page 376). The only marriage I have so far been able to trace between the death of Rosa Bond and the 1901 census that fits the criteria took place in Bromley, kent in the second quarter of 1900. A Thomas Bond married a Louisa Imrie (Volume 2a Page 941). This seems likely to be the reference for Bond's second marriage. In 1871 Bond and his first wife were already living in Westminster, but not at the address which he occupied at the time of the murders. 1871: 50 Parliament Street, Westminster Head: Thomas Bond aged 29 born Taunton, Somerset - Surgeon F.R.C.S. M.B. and B.S. Lond. Wife: Rosa S Bond aged 27 born Esher, Surrey Assistant: Thomas W Lacey aged 24 born Loughborough, Leics - Physician L.R.C.P. M.R.C.S. Pupil: Henry P Payne aged 21 born Southampton - Medical student Servants: Maria Morrell aged 26 born Milverton, Somerset - Cook Mary A Morrell aged 20 born Milverton, Somerset - Housemaid By the time of the 1881 census (and indeed throughout the rest of the available census evidence) Bond and his family had moved to The Sanctuary. In the period between 1871 and 1881 Thomas and Rosa Bond had produced five children: 1881: 7 The Sanctuary, Westminster Head: Thomas Bond aged 39 born Taunton, Somerset - Surgeon F.R.C.S. M.B. Lon. Wife: Rosa S Bond aged 37 born Esher, Surrey Children: Lucy P aged 9 Margaret H H aged 8 Mabel A aged 6 Harold T H aged 6 Arthur G H aged 2 months All children born in London Boarder: George Cramer aged 21 born Geneva - Banker's clerk Servants: Mary Ann Street aged 35 born Ringwood Elizabeth Stratton aged 37 born Ringwood Bessie Chilcool aged 26 born Dulverlin Mary Ann Cogdale aged 16 born Essex The Sanctuary was a very prestigious address in that it lay in the heart of Westminster. It was (and is) a small road which runs off Broad Sanctuary, a road which runs right beside Westminster Abbey and leads into Parliament Square, location of the Houses of Parliament. In 1891 the family was at the same address, but no further children had been born: 1891: 7 The Sanctuary, Westminster Head: Thomas Bond aged 49 born Durston, Somerset - Consulting Surgeon Wife: Rosa Sophia Bond aged 47 born Esher, Surrey Children: Lucy E aged 19 - Art student Margaret H H aged 18 Harold T Hayes aged 12 T Reginald B aged 5 Arthur G H aged 10 All children born in Westminster Servants: Elizabeth Stratton aged 40 born Rochford, Hants Emily C Coxhead aged 29 born Newport, Isle of Wight Maria E Harman aged 43 born St Helier, Jersey Alice Lucy Irsingell (?) aged 21 born Camberwell By 1901 Bond had remarried, as outlined above, and three of his children were still living with him and his new wife: 1901: 7 The Sanctuary, Westminster Head: Thomas Bond aged 59 born Durston, Somerset - Consulting Surgeon Wife: Louisa Bond aged 52 born Norwich, Norfolk Children: Margaret H H aged 28 born Westminster Mabel A aged 26 born Westminster - Professional singer Harold T H aged 22 born Westminster - Articled clerk to solicitor Servants: Elizabeth Stratton aged 59 born Rockford, Hampshire Emily Moyce aged 36 born Freshwater, Isle of Wight Maud Lincoln aged 17 born New Cross, Kent Bond died a few months after the 1901 census. His death was registered in the second quarter of 1901 at St Georges Hanover Square (Volume 1a Page 305). His age at death was given as 59. |

John Gabe 1856 - 1910 John Gabe was Welsh by birth, from Merthyr Tydfil. He was the son of Rees Gabe, innkeeper at the Lord Raglan public house in Merthyr, and Ann Gabe. Both his parents were originally from Carmarthen. John Gabe was one of six children, having three brothers and two sisters. In 1871 we see the 12 year old John living at home with his parents and siblings: 1871: The Lord Raglan, 119 High Street, Merthyr Tydfil Head: Rees Gabe aged 48 born Carmarthen - Innkeeper Wife: Ann Gabe aged 44 born Carmarthen Children: Benjamin aged 16 - Plasterer John aged 16 - Clerk Elizabeth aged 13 Henry aged 11 Rees aged 9 Rachel M aged 4 All children born in Merthyr Servants: Mary Thomas aged 21 born Carmarthen Margaret Thomas aged 35 born Carmarthen Margaret Harris aged 19 born Cardigan Margaret Harris aged 13 born Brecon Thomas Price aged 27 born Merthyr - Ostler Although by 1881 Gabe had married and set up his own household, he was still living in Wales. His household at this time included three members of his wife's family, her maiden name being Annie Rosser. The marriage was registered at Pontardawe, Glamorgan in the third quarter of 1877 (Volume 11a Page 707). 1881: Llangefelach Road, Clase, Glamorgan Head: John B Gabe aged 27 born Merthyr Tydfil - General practitioner L.S.A. etc. Wife: Annie Gabe aged 22 born Aberavon, Glamorgan Mother in law: Margaret Rosser aged 59 born Cowbridge, Glamorgan Sister in law: Jenny Rosser aged 19 born Aberavon Brother in law: John S Rosser aged 15 born Aberavon Servant: Margaret Davies aged 17 born Llansamlet, Glamorgan It is in 1891 that we see Gabe at the address gievn in accounts at the time of the murders, that is Meckelenburg Square. By this time he and his wife had produced three offspring, two daughters and one son. 1891: 16 Mecklenburgh Square, St Pancras, London Head: John R Gabe aged 39 born Merthyr Tydfil, Wales - Duly registered Medical man - General Practitioner - Surgeon Wife: Marion L S Gabe aged 35 born Preston, Lancs Children: Caroline M aged 10 born Spitalfields Winifred A aged 7 born Spitalfields Ivor S aged 5 born St Pancras Visitors: Rachel M Gabe aged 23 born Merthyr Tydfil Frederick G Fincham aged 37 born St Helens, Lancs - Woollen agent Servant: Ellen F Cobb aged 28 born Plymouth At some point between 1891 and 1901 Gabe returned to Wales, as he is registered in the 1901 census as living in Swansea. It appears that subsequent to this he returned to his birthplace of Merthyr Tydfil, for his death was registered in that town in the first quarter of 1910, his age at death being given as 62 (Volume 11a Page 452).

George Ernest Haslip born 1864 Birth registered in Poplar in the third quarter of 1864 (Volume 1c Page 661) George Haslip, involved in the Emma Smith case, was born in Poplar, the son of James and Sarah Haslip. His family background seems to have been maritime rather than medical, his father being listed as a pilot and his grandfather as a master mariner. He was one of five children, but a number of these appear to have died young. In 1871 the family was living in Gravesend, Kent and the details given are as follows: 1871: 3 Whitehall Place, Milton, Gravesend, Kent Head: James Haslip aged 39 born Poplar - Pilot Wife: Sarah A Haslip aged 31 born St George East Children: George E aged 6 born Poplar Sarah A aged 4 born Poplar Hilda aged 3 born Gravesend Father in Law: Moses Simpson aged 68 born Filey - Master Mariner Mother in Law: Sarah Simpson aged 58 born Bermondsey Servants: Sarah Edwards aged 20 born Gravesend Susannah A Bowler aged 17 born Swanscombe, Kent Ten years later, at the time of the 1881 census, George was still living in Gravesend with his parents. The road is the same, but the number has changed from 3 to 13 but this may be a transcripton error: 1881: 13 Whitehall Place, Milton, Gravesend, Kent Head: James Haslip aged 49 born Poplar - Pilot Wife: Sarah A Haslip aged 41 born St George's East Children: James S aged 22 born Poplar - Builder George E aged 16 born Poplar - Medical student Adeline aged 7 born Gravesend Wife's mother: Sarah Simpson aged 68 born Bermondsey Servants: Mary A Walker aged 28 born Northfleet, Kent - Cook Emily Walker born Northfleet - Housemaid At some time between 1881 and 1888, the time of the Smith murder, Haslip must have moved to London. In the surviving papers relating to the Smith case we are told that Haslip was House Surgeon at the London Hospital but we are not given an address for him. In the press accounts the name of the attending surgeon is given as G.H. Hellier. In the 1891 census there are 9 persons of the name of G Hellier listed living in the London area. None of these has any connection to the medical profession. How this confusion of names arose between the police papers and the press reports is not apparent. The 1891 census does not gives us Haslip's address as he is listed as a visitor at the household of another medic, George Hamerton. 1891: 3 Southampton Street, Covent Garden, London Visitor: George E Haslip aged 26 born London - Doctor of Medicine, Registered Surgeon Head of household is George A Hamerton aged 35 born Brixton, London - Doctor of Medicine, Registered Surgeon Another medic is listed as a visitor at the time same time: Arthur E Atkinson aged 22 born Stamford - Surgeon By 1901 Haslip, still unmarried, has moved to a very respectable address, Northumberland Avenue in the St Martin in the Fields district: 1901: 6 Northumberland Avenue, London Head: George Ernest Haslip aged 36 born London - Doctor of medicine / Surgeon Servants: John Brinton aged 24 born Cowes, Isle of Wight - Housekeeper Mina Brinton aged 31 born Essex

Fascinating stuff, very useful family history background. W S Saunders' uncle, Richard Taylor Saunders was also with the Commission for Sewers, as a clerk, lived at 6 East side of Bethnal Green - see 1851 census for more detail of that family. |

Hi All, Having trouble logging in, so posting as a guest. My friend Louise has a great grandfather who dealt with the Ripper Murders. He was Rees Ralph Llewellyn. I found him on the 1881 census, along with siblings and housekeepers. I also found his parents too, but that was all. Thanks to Chris, I have found heaps and heaps of information, which I can now give to her. Her father is aged approx 60 and has the name Llewellyn, so it has carried through the family since the 1800's, at least. I am going to have a look at the post I have just found regarding R.R.L's death. If anyone has anymore info regarding the Llewellyn's, it would be gratefully appreciated. If I am allowed, my mail address is indigopussycat2@yahoo.com. Thank you.}}}}} |

Picked this up rather late in the day. Very interesting line of research. Dr Bond''s assistant was actually Charles Alfred Hebbert (my great grandfather). He was born in June 1856 in Birming}ham and was a lecturer in anatomy at the Westminster Hospital at the time of the Ripper murders. In addition to his work on the Kelly and Mylett autopsies, he did a comparative study of the four 'torso' murders (Rainham, Whitehall, Thames and Pinchin Street). He emigrated to Canada in the early 1890s and died in Australia in 1925 |

Beatrice Sarah, my father's cousin, married into the Sequeira family on 1 June 1904. Her husband was Ernest Rackwitz Sequeira, a cousin of George William Sequeira and of Henry James Sequeira. Yes, Chris, I am afraid they were not one and the same person! Amelia was living under the same roof as one brother (George) in 1871 and under the same roof as the other brother (Henry) in 1881. Roots of the Sequeira family go back to Isaac Henrique Sequeira (born 1738 at Lisbon), who emigrated from Portugal to England in the mid-18th Century. He had at least two sons, one named James Sequeira (born 1780, married 14 Jly 1821, died Aug 1851). This James had three children: Louisa Sequeira (born 1824/25, unmarried), Henry Little Sequeira (born 1825/26) and James Scott Sequeira (born 1829). All three were born at Whitechapel; the two sons were both surgeons (MRCS & LAS) and worked at the London Hospital. In the mid-1850s, Henry Little Sequeira married Amelia (born 1829/30 at Peckham). They always lived on Jewry Street, but they owned Walthamstow Lodge (156 Tulse Hill), in which some of their children were living on CensusNight 1881. By 1901, Henry L. had died and the widowed Amelia was living in Croydon. Their children were: Amelia Louise Sequeira (born 1855), Henry James Sequeira (born 1857), George William Sequeira (born 1859), John Baily Sequeira (born 1867q1), Alfred Edmund Sequeira (born 1870q1) and Septimus William (born 1872q4). All six were born at Jewry Street. Henry J. and George W. became surgeons. John B. worked for a distillery and by 1901 was living in Clapham with his wife Alice. They had two daughters: Shirley (born 1897q3 at East Grinstead) and Mabel (born Jan 1901 at Clapham). Septimus became a dispensing pharmacist. By 1901, he was living at Hornsey with his wife Jessie and son Clifford Woodmass Sequeira (born 1900q2 at Muswell Hill, Holborn RegDist). In the early 1860s, James Scott Sequeira married Maria Rackwitz (born 1835 at Lambeth). Their children were: James Henry Sequeira (born 1865q4), Ernest Rackwitz Sequeira (born 1867q1), Walter S.H. Sequeira (born 1870) and Clara R.L. Sequeira (born 1872). All four were born at Whitechapel. Ernest became an Anglican minister in 1895 and he was Vicar of Uffington, Shropshire (1921-1941). Both James H. and Walter S.H. became surgeons. James H. Sequeira specialised in dermatology and syphilology. For the London Hospital in the early 1900s, he obtained Finsen lamps for the treatment of lupus vulgaris and he introduced radium sources to treat skin cancers (rodent ulcers). He was in Kenya, working on leprosy, 1922-1932. He married Nellie Adams at Warwick RegDist in 1903q3. Walter S.H. Sequeira was single and living in Kent on CensusNight 1901. In 1885, Henry James Sequeira married Inez Elfrida Stafford at Brentford. They had a daughter, Ivey (born 1885/86). Inez died in 1887 and Henry J. remarried in 1890q1 at Wandsworth RegDist. His second wife was Ella Mary Sadler (born 1862/63 at Wimbledon). At first, they were living in the St. Katherine's Creek district (probably on or near Jewry Street). They moved to Wandsworth after CensusNight 1891 and had moved to Edmonton (Middlesex) by the beginning of 1897. Their children were: Henry Cyril (born 1891q2), Ella Doris (born 1892q2), Bernard Augustus (born 1894q2), Frances Muriel (born 1897q1, died within the same quarter) and Hylda Mary (born 1898q3). Henry C. was born at Leytonstone, WestHam RegDist; the next two were born at Wandsworth; the next two were born at Edmonton. In 1886q4, George William Sequeira married Georgina Peachey (born 1863 at Woodford). They married at Lambeth RegDist. At first, they were living at his parents' house (34 Jewry Street). That is where they were living at the time of Catherine Eddowes' murder (30 Sep 1888), but they had moved to Leyton (Fairlop Road) by CensusNight 1891. They seem to have moved to Wandsworth between 1892 and 1895, then to Edmonton (Wellington Road) by 1901. Their children were: Horace (born 1887q4 at Aldgate/Jewry Street?), Edmund (born 1889 at Dulwich, died 1895q3 at Wandsworth), Ida (born May 1890 at Leytonstone), Marion (born 1892q1 at Leytonstone), Bertha (born 1895q3 at Wandsworth). I can't place Gertrude Sequeira (the companion & visitor, age 22 on CensusNight 1901) either, Chris. There was a Winifred Marian Sequeira born at WestHam RegDist in 1887q3. But I don't know if she changed her name to or was related to Gertrude. After 1901, there were four more daughters born either to George & Georgina Sequeira or to Henry & Ella Sequeira. They were: Madeline Olive (born 1901q3), Irene Jessica (born 1902q3), Enid Marjorie (born 1904q1) and Greta Mary (born 27 June 1907). The first three were born at Edmonton, while Greta was born at Rochford (Essex). Greta became quite notorious. She married Ranald/Paul Valentine in the early 1940s. Among her friends were Lamorna Birch (painter of Cornish landscapes), Lady Frieda Harris (wife of the Liberal Party Chief Whip) and Aleister Crowley (self-styled Beast 666, who appears on the cover of the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club LP cover). Greta died on 28 Nov 1998 in Sussex. Fascinated to hear more about the Whitechapel doctors and about the Sequeira family. }}} REG ADAMS |
